Western Cape Closed
Call for entries – ENTRIES CLOSED:
This is a call for entries for this year’s Western Cape Closed tournament.
Entries close on 28 February, but the earlier you enter, the more
convenient it is for the organisers. Entry is free.
Games in all phases of this tournament are played at club meetings, on the
internet, or wherever else the players can agree to a convenient time and
place, except the Challenger’s League which is played as a weekend
tournament on October 14-15. Each round in the qualifying phase will have
a deadline by which games in that round must be completed – games not
completed by the deadline will be treated as losses for both players
involved. Otherwise, it’s Japanese rules, with 6.5 komi.
The tournament is open to anyone who lives in the Western Cape, or is a member of a Western Cape go club. Everyone from beginners through to strong players are encouraged to enter – the preliminary phase is designed to prevent people getting (too many) ridiculously matched games.
So, e-mail me if you want to take part.
The following people are automatically registered due to their performance

Challenger’s League
Bernard and Steve join the other 4 players who were seeded into the Meijin Challengers’ League (seeded 5th and 6th respectively). The players placed 5th and 6th in the league will have to attempt to qualify for a position in the league next year, while positions 2-4 and the loser of the title match will be seeded into next years’ league directly. Note that position in the league is important since league ties in future years will be decided on the basis of position in the previous years’ league.
The Challengers’ League will be a 6-player round robin held over the weekend of 14-15 October at Andrew Davies’ house. Time limits for these matches are 1 hour each, with 15 stones/5 minutes Canadian byo-yomi.(*) Colours are determined by nigiri. In the case of a league tie, seeded position in the league (determined by performance in the previous year/qualifiers) will be a tie-breaker.
League players by seeding:
1. Andrew Davies
2. Shui-Tao Fan
3. Lloyd Rubidge
4. Reinhardt Messerschmidt
5. Bernard Broens
6. Steve Kroon
Shui-Tao indicated that he was moving to Seattle and thus withdrawing from the league, so like 2005, only 5 players remained in the league. Shui-Tao is thus automatically placed 6th and would have to try to qualify for the league again next year if he were to participate in the tournament. The last-placed player in the league will also have to attempt to qualify for a position in the league next year, while positions 2-4 and the loser of the title match will be seeded into next years’ league directly. Note that position in the league is important since league ties in future years will be decided on the basis of position in the previous years’ league.
Challengers’ League table:
Players | A.D | L.R | R.M | B.B | S.K | Result | Final Pos. | |
1 | Andrew Davies | – | X | X | X | X | 0-4 | 5 |
2 | Lloyd Rubidge | B+R | – | X | W+R | W+8.5 | 3-1 | 1 |
3 | Reinhardt Messerschmidt | W+R | W+25.5 | – | B+T | X | 3-1 | 2 |
4 | Bernard Broens | B+T | X | X | – | W+128.5 | 2-2 | 3 |
5 | Steve Kroon | W+5.5 | X | W+R | X | – | 2-2 | 4 |
The draw for the round robin league was as follows:
Round 1, Saturday 09h30 (game winners will be shown in bold):
Bernard Broens (W) | Reinhardt Messerschmidt (B) |
Lloyd Rubidge (W) | Steve Kroon (B) |
Round 2, Saturday 13h30 (game winners will be shown in bold):
Andrew Davies (W) | Bernard Broens (B) |
Reinhardt Messerschmidt (W) | Lloyd Rubidge (B) |
Round 3, Saturday 16h45 (game winners will be shown in bold):
Steve Kroon (W) | Reinhardt Messerschmidt (B) |
Andrew Davies (W) | Lloyd Rubidge (B) |
Round 4, Sunday 09h30 (game winners will be shown in bold):
Lloyd Rubidge (W) | Bernard Broens (B) |
Steve Kroon (W) | Andrew Davies (B) |
Round 5, Sunday 13h30 (game winners will be shown in bold):
Reinhardt Messerschmidt (W) | Andrew Davies (B) |
Bernard Broens (W) | Steve Kroon (B) |
*: The initial announcement said 20 stones in 5 minutes, but 15 stones was mistakenly used at the tournament. This change made games take longer, but there were still 2 of 10 games decided by time, so the longer byo-yomi limits seem reasonable.
