Results
Twelve players participated in this year’s Cape Town Open on the 12th of March. A number of players dealt with the continuing uncertainty over their ranks by entering at levels higher than their official rank, with the adjusted ranks proving much better on the day. The biggest “ringer” was James Gelant, officially 18 kyu, who entered at 14 kyu and still won two out of three at handicaps of MacMahon difference minus one. All of the up and coming players were particularly impressive with their continuing improvement and seemed to be playing above their increased rank.
The bar was set at 5 kyu, with 8 players entering above and 4 below the bar. The surprise of the tournament was Steve Kroon, entered at 5 kyu, who beat defending champion Andrew Davies (1 kyu) in the first round by killing a large group in an all-or-nothing fight and followed up by beating 3rd seed Lloyd Rubidge (3 kyu) with a nasty endgame ripoff. In the end, the winner was Konrad Scheffler, 1 dan, who benefited from Steve having taken out his main rivals.
