Soweto Schools Tournament on 25 May 2013

The Soweto Schools Go Programme started in the 1990s and involved two tournaments for the participating primary schools. Since the revival of this Programme in 2012, two more tournaments were held, the most recent one being on 25 May 2013.

This most recent tournament drew 57 participants from four Soweto primary schools: Ekuphumeleleni, Usindiso, Enkolweni and Thathezakho Primary Schools. The hosting school, Ekuphumeleleni Primary, also won the floating trophy for the second time in a row, taking eight of the ten gold medals.

It was a six-round MacMahon tournament and led to a clear winner. The top fifteen results are given below:

Place Name School Points SOS SOSOS
1 Khethini, Lethukuthula Ekup 6 52 310
2 Gida, Sechaba Usin 5 57 307

Thank you to all Go players who showed their support by attending (David Richfield, John Leuner, Sipho Mampe, Thabiso Lemeke), and to Welile Gogotshe for his consistent efforts in teaching Go to these young children.

If all goes well, I plan to sponsor a second tournament this year, most likely in September 2013.

Photos have been uploaded to the SA Go clubs galleries.

News from Korea

Ben Gale says:

I will see him this weekend. It seems every time I try to call him, he is not around. But, Fritiof told me something like “He’s a good guy really, never complains about anything” and that he is having a good time. He was worried that he didn’t have enough money, but the academy guys all entered a tournament after a week or so, and Welile came 2nd, winning himself 300000won, approx R2000 – enough to be able to live/eat really well and still go home with profit. And he knows how to reach me if he has a problem.

Pretoria tournament on Saturday; Julius’ funeral also on Saturday

Hi all,
There was a memorial service for Julius Paulu yesterday in Dobsonville, Soweto.  It was very moving, and Julius will be fondly remembered by many people.  Julius Paulu’s funeral will be on Saturday.  If anyone wants to know more details, you can contact myself, Ben or any of the Soweto go players for more information.
Also this Saturday there will be the first Pretoria Open for a long time.  If anyone is interested in going, I will be travelling to Pretoria from Bedfordview on Saturday morning if you’re looking for a lift.  Give me a call on 082 393 4917.

The death of Julius Paulu

The following is reposted from the SAGA mailing list, sent by Ben Gale on 16 September:

Hello everyone

It is with regret that I must bring you this news. Julius Paulu, one of the longest-standing and most-loved members of the South African go community, died last night when he was shot in a hijacking. He was 24 years old. He leaves behind his mother, younger daughter and girlfriend of five years.

When I first started to become friends with Julius, he was somewhere around the beginning of high school. He lived with his family in a small shack. His dream was to get a job so that he could look after his family and they could move out into their own house. But he had no electricity and could hardly study. He woke up every day at 4am so he could walk the 6km to school because he did not have the money for a taxi. He worked tirelessly. In 2001, we were happy to learn that Julius had achieved something that hardly anyone from his school had ever achieved – university admission. Yesterday, he was working as a cost accountant, and was due to complete his BCom at the end of the year. He was achieving his dreams. And we know he would have achieved so much more.

Even when things were not going his way, he always had time to look after other people. Children saw him as a father figure, while adults were taken aback by his manners, charm and good nature. He radiated positivity everywhere he went. There was never a dull moment with him around – he always had a laugh to share with everybody. He was a good friend to so many of us.

We can all learn so much from him.

** A funeral service will be held, but the details are not yet finalised (it will probably be held next week). Anybody interested in attending the funeral can contact Sipho Mampe on 0847807820. Otherwise, you can speak to me – I will be in regular contact with Sipho.
