Pretoria club – Simultaneous challenge

Members of the Pretoria go club accepted a challenge from the Joburg go club last night – an evening of simultaneous games where John (3d) and Andre (3d) would play simultaneous handicap games against all comers.

The event was held in the Cool Runnings pub, where there were some live singers on stage, and the pizza and drinks flowed freely. Great fun was had by all, and congratulations go out to Tinus who overcame the odds to win his match. Tinus walked away with a copy of “Go the worlds most fascinating game” and a portable 9×9 set as his reward.

The next event planned will be the Pretoria/Gauteng Handicap Blitz tournament, which will take place in July.

Soweto Schools Tournament on 25 May 2013

The Soweto Schools Go Programme started in the 1990s and involved two tournaments for the participating primary schools. Since the revival of this Programme in 2012, two more tournaments were held, the most recent one being on 25 May 2013.

This most recent tournament drew 57 participants from four Soweto primary schools: Ekuphumeleleni, Usindiso, Enkolweni and Thathezakho Primary Schools. The hosting school, Ekuphumeleleni Primary, also won the floating trophy for the second time in a row, taking eight of the ten gold medals.

It was a six-round MacMahon tournament and led to a clear winner. The top fifteen results are given below:

Place Name School Points SOS SOSOS
1 Khethini, Lethukuthula Ekup 6 52 310
2 Gida, Sechaba Usin 5 57 307
3 Ndwandwe, Bongani Usin 5 56 306
4 Dube, Dumisani Ekup 5 52 307
5 Mabaso, Sabelo Ekup 5 51 308
6 Govender, Smalangiso Ekup 5 51 305
7 Ngubane, Thando Ekup 5 49 299
8 Vilakazi, Lindokuhle Ekup 4 55 293
9 Mhlongo, Rocky Ekup 4 54 301
10 Mkhaliphi, Nhlonipho Ekup 4 53 297

14 Molefe, Tshepang Ekup 4 51 301
15 Nhlapo, Siyabonga Ekup 4 50 295

Thank you to all Go players who showed their support by attending (David Richfield, John Leuner, Sipho Mampe, Thabiso Lemeke), and to Welile Gogotshe for his consistent efforts in teaching Go to these young children.

If all goes well, I plan to sponsor a second tournament this year, most likely in September 2013.

Photos have been uploaded to the SA Go clubs galleries.

Cape Town Blitz 2008

The Cape Town Go Club is hosting the 4th annual Blitz Tournament!

Tuesday November 25, 2008 – 7:30pm

A Touch of Madness, Observatory

No fees are payable. The tournament is open to members of the Cape Town club. Note that it is quite straightforward to become a member of the club: indicate to one of the committe members that you wish to join, or simply register for the tournament and you will automatically become a member. Note that you must be ranked, i.e. have an official SAGC level, in order for the handicapping to be effective.

The tournament is still to be finalized, but will roughly be as follows:

absolute blitz (no byoyomi) – 12 minutes per side
30 minutes per round
standard handicaps will be applied
5 rounds will be played, with a 6th if required for tiebreaking
a swiss format will be used in order to do the pairing.

Some salient differences from a normal game

– 4 passes are required to end a game
– pushing the clock constitutes the end of the move (so moves can be taken back)
– removal of more than one stone entitles you to pause the clock
– it is not illegal or unethical to utilize any time advantage you may have

Please see the rules page for further details.

Tournament director:
Chris Welsh – please mail him if you intend to play at quantumf AT

The winner of the tournament will be named the 2008 Cape Town Blitz Champion.

Since the games will be lightning games, they will not count as ranked games.
