If you oppose this move and are a member of JHB Go Club, now is the time to speak up.

Note: This issue has been discussed on the JHB mailing list at length, with no one opposing the move yet. Please use JHB mailing list for any comments.

Aketa in Gauteng

A weekly schedule is beginning to emerge for Aketa’s
stay in Gauteng:

1) Monday afternoon: University of Johanneburg
1.5) Monday night: PTA Club (please let us know if you

are lifting him, others may want to tag along from
JHB/Soweto/UJ)
2) Tuesday night: JHB Club
3) Wednesday: Aketa’s no go day
4) Thursday afternoon: UJ
5) Thursday Evening: JHB Club
6) Friday afternoon: UJ
7) Friday Evening: Go to his place and get a lesson
8) Sat. & Sun.: Individual vistiors to his place

His mornings are free and he welcomes players to come
around to his place. His number is 076 600 5445.

Address: #4 3rd Avenue, Melville (just off main/Beyers
Naude)

Planned (but to be confirmed activities)

1) 2 to 3 trips to PTA over weekends
2) Tuesday afternoon: Soweto Go Club (I need
volunteers for lifts for Aketa, petrol compensation to
be provided)
3) Ad hoc weekend events (such as a tournament, Soweto
day, etc.)

If you can help out with any of the above, do mail Tristen Taylor

Please do contribute to the Fund, as we still need to
pay for one more month’s rent plus lights.

On a personal note, I spent some time with him on
Sunday, and found the instruction invaluable, better
than months worth of book study.

JHB Accepts Articles of Operation

1) We have a new Articles of Operation, as it was approved 13 to none, with one person undecided. Well done to all. Dale will circulate the final version soon.

2) The principle of rotation gathered (7 confirmed votes with one additional vote unconfirmed) while the principle of elections lost out with only 6 votes. In the next few months, we’ll try and work out a decent and fair rotational system, including suggestions such as Markus’s credit system (I see merit in the idea, and, for example, running two handicap tournaments within a 6 months period would be equivalent to being the asset sec for six months and would count as such in the rotational system). This will, of course, have to be approved by all voting members.

3) In the interim, we do need to fill the roles of Asset Sec. and Information Officer. Ben Gale has
kindly volunteered to do one role, and we need someone else to volunteer for the other role. At the moment, it seems fair that the rotational roster would have me and Dave at the bottom (i.e. at the back of the line, so to speak) of the roster. When Ben and whomever else finish, they would then go to the bottom of the roster and Dave and I would move up two spaces. So, this is the chance to get your service to the club fulfilled early and not have to worry about it for some years. After Ben and whomever else, the rotational system will decide who gets to do the dirty work for the second half of 2006 and beyond.

4) A complete how-to guide for running the club should be up on the website within the next couple of days.

5) Thanks to all who participated in this long but important process.

Voting Results for JHB Articles

The votes for the Articles seem to be coming in. So far, it goes:

Articles of Operation

13 votes for the Articles (Leander, Dale, Tristen, Pablo, Templar, Simone, Carle, Willhem, Alan, Marc, Martin Cook (new to the club and welcome), Ben, and Fred)

0 votes against
1 vote undecided (Paul Edwards)

In regards to Rotation vs. Election (Please check to make sure I have you in the right category)

Rotation: 8 votes for. (Dale, Tristen, Marc, Pablo, Leander, Willhem, Carle and one other (please provide your name asap))

Election: 6 votes for. (Fred, Alan, Templar, Simone, Ben and Martin Cook)

So far the rotation system seems to be winning. Voting will remain open until 10am Friday morning, after which we can formally adopt (or reject) the Articles and then select asset sec and info officer.

Thanks to all who made the effort to be there last night.

JHB Meeting Tomorrow

Tomorrow evening (1st of Nov., 6:30pm to 7:30pm, at Betties Tearoom) we’ll be having an important meeting to discuss the future of JHB Club and who does what. Btw, I’m resigning of all organising/administration/communication duties. Tomorrow will be my last day. It has been fun, and thanks to you all.

We have a draft Articles of Operation, which Dale will hopefully circulate today on the JHB mailing list. We’ll discuss that at the meeting tomorrow, and throughout the week via email. The aim is to have the Articles of Operation voted on by the following Tuesday. The idea is to spread the load and ensure stability.

At some point, I guess, we will also have to figure out what to do with Aketa.

Aketa, Saturday and Next Week

So far Aketa’s visit has been something of a success. On Tuesday, he came to the club. On Wednesday, Ben took him around in the afternoon and evening. I took him around on Thursday (had a lesson, which showed me what I was doing both wrong and right; I really learnt something about go), and then again to the club in the evening. Today, Dave’s taking him to a game reserve.

*Saturday*

Tomorrow (Sat. 7th of Oct), we’ll be having a “Go Day” at Wits. As Aketa will be getting back late from the game reserve, we’ll start at 11:00am and go till about 6:00pm.

The venue is in the Central Block, near the Great Hall. East Campus. See map here:Map of Wits .

Directions: From Empire road, turn into Yale Road. Proceed past security, straight at the stop street, straight again at the roundabout, and up to the traffic lights. At the traffic lights, there’s a major walkway into Wits’s East Campus. Park your car (there’s ample parking), and go into Wits (you’ll be heading east) via this walkway. Proceed straight until you reach Central Block (that’s the main building at Wits, grey stone, neo-classical design). Go up the
Great Steps and into the main foyer. In front of you is the Great Hall, to the right the philosophy department and to the left, the history department. You turn left and walk to the end of the passage, where there is a staircase (going both up and down). At the staircare, turn left into a small passageway. We’re in a room in there.

If you get lost, call me on 084 250-2434

*Next Week*

Aketa will be around for another week. Of course, he’ll be at the Club on Tuesday and Thursday night. It looks like he’ll go to Pretoria on Monday night and the Pretoria guys will look after him on Monday (Marius, Luke, Kupie, please confirm asap).

This means we need to look after him on Tuesday day, Wednesday day and evening, Thursday day, and Friday day and evening.

If you can, please take a day (or afternoon) off and play some go with him. His comments are worth it alone, and he’s a pretty nice chap. Working together, we can do this. Let us know if you do decide to do something with him.

Aketa’s number is: 076 600-5445
His address is: #12, 8th Ave., Parktown North
