SA battle UK for top spot in Pandanet League

Chris Welsh reports the following on tonight’s matches in Group C of the Pandanet European Team League:

South Africa play the United Kingdom tonight at 9pm in a top of the table clash. The result in this event will have a large say in who wins the league. Both sides have put out their strongest teams, with tonight marking the debuts of Victor “RoseDuke” Chow and Ben “Ben1981” Gale. Victor will be battling load shedding, while Ben will be playing from Korea (3am local time!). The games can be watched live on IGS in the Pandanet EuroTeam Championship room.

Good luck to team SA!

SAGA president’s report – 2013/2014

Those who looked carefully might have noticed that a link to the SAGA President’s report for 2013/2014 was not included in the AGM notice. The report is now available on the SAGoClubs wiki, and gives a nice overview of Go activities in South Africa over the past year.

RIP Sally Gross

I am sad to pass on this news from Lloyd Rubidge:

I am very sad to report that Sally’s body was found in her home on Friday night after friends and neighbours alerted the police that she had not been seen since Tuesday.

Many of you knew Sally Gross. She had a keen interest in Go for many, many years, and played when she could at A Touch of Madness, until her health problems made that too difficult for her.

She was a bright and caring person, and lived a full and varied life.

Rest in peace, Sally.

Victor Chow wins Pandanet Cup Internet World Amateur Go Tournament

A hearty congratulations to Victor “RoseDuke” Chow, who won the 18th Pandanet Cup Internet World Amateur Go Tournament (also the 2013 SportAccord-Pandanet Cup Online Go Tournament) earlier this month! This victory also means he gets an expenses-paid opportunity to observe the World Mind Sports Games in Beijing in December.

In the final, he beat “Cornel” (presumably Cornel Burzo) of Romania. View the tournament table and (a UGI file of) the final game.

Edit: The original post erroneously indicated the prize was an opportunity to participate in, not observe, the WMSG.

He has lost to two 1-dans and a strong German opponent, and has beaten a 1-kyu after the opponent played a suicide move in a ko fight. Results (currently until the end of round 3) are available at http://www.nihonkiin.or.jp/amakisen/worldama/34/e/result.html.

James Davies also interviewed Chris briefly – you can check out the interview here.
