Stellenbosch 2nd Quarter Handi completed

The 2nd Quarter Handicap Tournament is finished, and the final standings are available.

With David Richfield winning the second handicap tournament in a row, both at 6k, he must have been underranked, a theory supported by his recent promotion shortly after the tournament.

David Richfield wins 2nd Quarter Stb Handi

Congratulations to David Richfield who became the first person to win two Stellenbosch Handicap Tournaments by beating Ben Bredenkamp last Thursday, despite the odds stacked against him. It was an upset win by 2 stones (due to Ben’s recent promotions), and broke Ben’s winning streak of 14 games in succession.

This was the first Stellenbosch handicap tournament that had more than 50% of games won by white, and convincingly so: so far, six games were won by white, and only two by black. One game has not yet been played. Full results will be posted as soon as they are available.

Final Call for Entries: Stellenbosch 2nd Quarter Handi

Players can register for the Stellenbosch 2nd Quarter Handicap Tournament now by e-mailing Hugo van der Merwe. It is a Swiss tournament in which the pairings are chosen to minimize the maximum handicap each round. (Last quarter had 13 entries evenly spread over 4k to 30k, which resulted in 4 games with >=9H.)

The entry fee for the tournament is R15, with a R10 discount for SAGA members or players who join SAGA before the tournament, payable by 19 April. R5 from each entry fee will be used as prize money. (Note that SAGA charges R80/R35/R20 for normal/student/scholar membership for 2006, providing discounts on e.g. books and tournaments for the rest of the year.)

Prize money will be split evenly between all players obtaining 3 wins in the tournament, so, the more the merrier! The winner with the highest SOS (or SOSOS if needed) will still be named the winner of the tournament.

Final Round of Stellenbosch First Quarter Handicap

The draw for the final round of the Stellenbosch First Quarter Handicap tournament is available.

There are four potential tournament winners, with the under-rated ones being Andre Heydenrych (+5) and Louis de Jager (+2) who won the 3rd Quarter tournament last year. Andre and Louis will be playing one another, while David Richfield and Heinz Staschen will be fighting over the second claim on the prize money of R65. The choice between these two claims will come down to SOS and SOSOS. While David and Andre have a slight lead in SOSOS, it will all depend on the results from the third round games. Louis may be at a slight disadvantage on SOS as he had a bye in the first round, while Andre’s first round opponent has a bye in the third round, giving him an immediate +1 on his SOS. In the second round, David (6k) achieved an “upset win” against Hugo van der Merwe (8k) according to current ranks, by defeating him in a 3H game. (Two of the other second round games were won by forfeit, unfortunately.)

The third round has 4 games with >=9H, which makes for 4/18 = 22% of the games, thus 78% at <9H. While this may sound tough, it should be considered that the participants are thoroughly spread all over the 4k-30k range. Last year’s first quarter handicap tournament was still a MacMahon tournament, also with 13 entries, 18 games, 4 at >=9H, however, entrants only ranged from 5k to 21k. Last year had a total of 116 “virtual handicap stones” given, while this year, with the much greater entrant rank range, had only 86 stones given, definately a huge improvement.

It is interesting to note the same number of players in the first quarter handicap tournament as a year ago. Lets try and improve on the other quarters’ participation levels (10 in second and third quarters, only 6 in the fourth quarter). The club is definately growing, this should be easily achievable! (You may already mail me your entries for the second quarter handicap tournament!)

Stellenbosch Handicap Underway

The first round of the Stellenbosch Handicap has been completed, with three of the 13 players obtaining promotions from their games. Since ranks are “fixed” for handicap tournaments, players promoted during the tournament are usually the ones in the running for the top positions.

Two of the promoted players, Wim (24k) and Andre (28k), will be playing each other in the second round. The other promoted player was Hanno (16k), who will be playing Louis. Jaco unfortunately lost against David by time (they had opted to play with a clock). Handicaps in the second round, which officially takes place on 2 March, range from 2 to 4.

First round results and secound round pairings are available.

Explanation of the SAGC ranking system

An explanation for the SAGC ranking system is available. It was updated to reflect the latest changes in the ranking system many weeks ago, but the examples have not been updated yet. The outdated examples have been removed for now, until I have the time/opportunity and inclination to update them. (Comments/encouragements go a long way to aid “inclination”, but time and opportunity have to present themselves independently.)
