Ben wins 2nd quarter 2010 SAGA internet tournament

We had a reasonably strong turn-out on Saturday, with the top group of 8 players all being 1k or stronger. Ben played from Korea, and managed to keep awake sufficiently to win the tournament. – Riaan Swart on his promotion to 4k.
– Francois van Niekerk on his promotion to 8k.
Thanks to all who took part and we look forward to seeing you all again at the 3rd quarter tournament. The final results after 3 rounds were:
1. Ben Gale
2-4. Konrad Scheffler, John Leuner, Andrew Davies
5-7. Andre Connell, Steve Kroon, Sam Scott
8. Chris Welsh
9-10. Riaan Swart, David Richfield
11. Francois van Niekerk
12. David Gale

SA Open 2010 report

The SA Open was held in Pretoria for the first time. It is great to see Go activity increasing here, and thanks to all in the club who helped with the event. The SA Open was a 6 round McMahon tournament played over Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February.

This year was anticipated to be an Oza event, but unfortunately with the withdrawal of the sponsorship, attendance at the event dropped. Also, the Dobsonville players only manged to attend on Sunday.

Congratulations to the following prize winners:
1st: Andre Connell
2nd: John Leuner
3rd: David Richfield
Best 11-7kyu: Gerrit Kapp

African representatives for WPGA Pair Go World Cup 2010

Congratulations to Victor and Carle who will represent Africa at the world cup to be held in Hangzhou, China from March 20 to March 23. They were the winners of the selection tournament held on 31 Jan.

Pair-Go, requiring a team of 1 male and 1 female is not big in Africa, and eventually only 3 teams were able to compete in the final. Of the IGF member nations, Madagascar and Morocco were unable to field any teams, and South Africa only managed 4, whcih was reduced to 3 on the day because of client/PC interface problems. The teams were:
Team1:
Victor Guang Chow, 7d
Carle Joubert, 4k
Team2:
Lloyd Rubidge, 1k
Cornelia vd Walt, 20k
Team3:
Rory Shea, 16k
Candice Barker, 27k

Round 1 was played between teams 2 and 3, and was won by Lloyd and Cornelia. They then faced team 1 in the final and were beaten by Victor and Carle. In both games it was interesting to observe the problems that arise when the partners follow different plans. It looked like upset results were quite possible.

Talk is underway to introduce a pair Go tournament to the SAGA calendar. Most likely it will be RenGo, where the gender of the teams is not specified.

Victor wins SA Closed 2009

With 4 Johannesburg and 4 Cape Town players qualifying for the SA Closed, it was decided to hold the tournament in Cape Town for the first time. Victor, being so much stronger than the rest of the field was given concession to play the Cape Town players on-line on KGS and the Jhb players on one evenimg at the club. As expected, he won the tournament winning all 7 of his games.

The SA Closed took place on the 25, 26 and 27 September at the Sweet Valley Primary School library. It was great to have new entries Chris Welsh and Lloyd Rubidge join the tournament. Unfortunately Paul Edwards had to withdraw so, with Victor’s games already played, the event was reduced to 5 rounds – 1 on Friday night, 2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. Ben won all his remaining games and so took second place. Third place was a 3-way tie between Konrad Scheffler, Andrew Davies and Andre Connell. The tie break uses previous results, so placed Konrad third, Andrew fourth and Andre fifth. Lloyd took sixth place, Chris seventh and Paul eighth.

Round 1 – Andre Connell vs Konrad Scheffler

Round 2 – Andrew Davies vs Ben Gale

Round 3 – Chris Welsh vs Konrad Scheffler

Round 4 – Andre Connell vs Lloyd Rubidge

Round 5 – Konrad Scheffler vs Ben Gale
