2011 SA Closed Championship report

The tournament was held in Johannesburg at Kairos School (www.kairosschool.co.za) from the 23th to 25th of September. Eight players qualify for the SA Closed, and this year 5 were based in Gauteng and 3 in the Cape. Special thanks go to Marc Loon for providing the venue, Victor, Andre and John for providing accommodation for the Cape town players and to all those who assisted with the other arrangements.

Congratulations to Victor who, as expected, once again won the tournament. The real battle is for second place, and this went to Sam who gave a very impressive performance.

Out of a possible 7 points, the final placings were:
7 points: Victor Chow
5 points: Sam Scott
4 points: Welile Gogotshe, Andrew Davies
3 points: Konrad Scheffler, Andre Connell
2 points: John Leuner
0 points: Paul Edwards

We all benefitted from Victor’s post game analysis. It was extremely instructive to see how simple he makes the correct play seem, and how much we still have to learn.

The SA-Closed is a hard-fought but friendly tournament. It is always great to see the players from so far away, and on Saturday night the players plus Paul’s wife went to a local restaurant for a meal together.

Victor wins 4th quarter 2010 SAGA internet tournament

We were a bit down on numbers for the tournament on Saturday. There has been a request to look at some sort of handicap system for the lower group. Weaker players are a bit over-awed by the rank differences as generally it is our stronger players who take part.
Congatulations to:
– Victor for winning the tournament.
– Ben Bredenkamp on winning group 2 and gaining promotion to 4k
– Chris (1k) on his upset against Konrad (2d).

This was SAGA’s final internet tournament for 2010. The results after 3 rounds were:
1. Victor Chow
2-4. Andrew Davies, Sam Scott, Chris Welsh
5-7. Konrad Scheffler, Steve Kroon, David Gale,
8. Lloyd Rubidge
9. Ben Bredenkamp
10. Alexander du Plessis
11. Gordon Wells

Here are some interesting stats from all four internet tournaments this year for group1. It shows each person’s tally of wins, with the number of games played in brackets.
7 wins: Konrad (12), Andrew (12)
6 wins: Victor (6), Chris W (12)
5 wins: Ben G (6), Sam (9)
4 wins: John (6)
2 wins: Steve (6), Dave G (6)
1 win: Andre (3), Lloyd (6), David R (6), Gordon (3)

2010 SA Closed Championship report

The tournament was held in the the library of Bergvliet High School, Cape Town from the 24th to 26th of September. Of the 8 players who qualified, 4 were based in the Cape and 4 in Gauteng. Victor, being so much stronger than the others, was given special permission to play his games beforehand (as it turns out, 1 game is still to be played, but I have credited Victor with the win for the sake of this report).
As usual, there were a number of upsets, time pressure finishes, wins against the run of play and exciting battles. Notably Konrad finished most games in byo-omi, his game against John requiring 8 moves in 12 seconds.
There was a great friendly atmosphere to the tournament which contrasted with the intense competitive spirit in which the games were played. On Saturday night the players and wives/children went to a local restaurant for a meal together.
Congatulations to:
– Victor for winning the tournament.
– Welile, in second place, being promoted to 2d
Out of a possible 7 points, the final placings were:
7 points: Victor Chow
6 points: Welile Gogotshe
5 points: Konrad Scheffler
3 points: John Leuner
2 points: Andre Connell (5th), Andrew Davies (6th), Sam Scott (7th)
1 point: Chris Welsh

(Tie-breaks were based on the results of games between the tied players).

Victor wins 3rd quarter 2010 SAGA internet tournament

We again had a reasonably strong turn-out on Saturday, We need to encourage more mid-kyu players to take part. It was great to have Mareck join us, and bravely tackle opponents all at least 10 stones stronger. Ben again played from Korea, and Chris joined us from China. His result suggests the training is already paying dividends. A bit of humour was added by Victor only beating Ben by 1.5 points. He was foiled in his aim of a 0.5 point victory by Ben cunningly losing an extra point.
Congatulations to:
– Victor for winning the tournament.
– Dave Gale on winning group 2
– Sam and Chris on their upset results against the 2-dan players.
– Francois van Niekerk on his promotion to 7k.

Thanks to all who took part and we look forward to seeing you all at the 4th quarter tournament on 6 Nov.
The final results after 3 rounds were:
1. Victor Chow
2-4. Ben Gale, Sam Scott, Chris Welsh
5-7. Konrad Scheffler, , Andrew Davies, Lloyd Rubidge
8. David Richfield
9. David Gale
10. Francois van Niekerk
11. Alexander du Plessis
12. Burt Rabie

Sam wins the SA Candidates 2010 tournament

The SA Candidates tournament was held on the 5th and 6th of June. It produced some very interesting games plus a number of upsets. These contributed to two promotions:
Sam Scott promoted to 1d
David Richfield promoted to 3k

The first day saw 4 people finish with 2/3, as the game between Sam and David did not take place. The top 4 qualified for day 2 of the Candidates. The final pacings for day 1 were:
David Richfield
Sam Scott
Welile Gogotshe
Sipho Mampe
Alexander du Plessis
James Nicolson
Paul Steyn
Francois van Niekerk

David, Sam, Welile and Sipho were joined by Lloyd, Chris, Steve and John who had pre-qualified based on last years results. In a closely matched group, Sam (1k) beat two 1d players on his way to 3/3 to win the tournament. Sipho unfortunately had network problems and disappeared soon after starting his first game. The final placings for day 2 were:
Sam Scott
Welile Gogotshe
John Leuner
Chris Welsh
Steve Kroon
Lloyd Rubidge
David Richfield
Sipho Mampe

Sam, Welile, John and Chris will now procede to the SA Closed in September, where they will be joined by Victor, Konrad, Andrew and Andre.
