The tournament was held in Johannesburg at Kairos School (www.kairosschool.co.za) from the 23th to 25th of September. Eight players qualify for the SA Closed, and this year 5 were based in Gauteng and 3 in the Cape. Special thanks go to Marc Loon for providing the venue, Victor, Andre and John for providing accommodation for the Cape town players and to all those who assisted with the other arrangements.
Congratulations to Victor who, as expected, once again won the tournament. The real battle is for second place, and this went to Sam who gave a very impressive performance.
Out of a possible 7 points, the final placings were:
7 points: Victor Chow
5 points: Sam Scott
4 points: Welile Gogotshe, Andrew Davies
3 points: Konrad Scheffler, Andre Connell
2 points: John Leuner
0 points: Paul Edwards
We all benefitted from Victor’s post game analysis. It was extremely instructive to see how simple he makes the correct play seem, and how much we still have to learn.
The SA-Closed is a hard-fought but friendly tournament. It is always great to see the players from so far away, and on Saturday night the players plus Paul’s wife went to a local restaurant for a meal together.
