Julius Paulu’s death last week came just before his second opportunity to represent South Africa as a Go player. In 2006, Julius attended the WAGC and did well to achieve 3 victories. Next month, Julius would have represented South Africa in Pair Go with Carle Joubert at the World Mind Sports Games in Beijing.
As a result of his death, another candidate had to be selected to replace him. Since he obtained the position based on the results of the 2007 SA Closed, the people placed behind him were approached. Cheng Lai, who placed fourth (Julius was third last year), was unable to attend, and as a result, Konrad Scheffler (who placed fifth) has been selected as Carle’s new teammate. We wish them and the rest of the South African WMSG team the best of luck.
