Go players who attended the Stellenbosch club in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s will remember Matthew Stallebrass as a club member. Matthew studied at Stellenbosch University before going to UWC to study his Masters in Computer Science. However, a blood condition led to him having a number of strokes in his early 20’s.
Matt, who lived in Somerset West, was a determined young man, who was intent on recovering fully from these setbacks and resuming his studies at UWC. Along the way, he bravely returned to the Stellenbosch club to try and pick up his Go playing again.
Matthew passed away earlier this month, on 15 August, ironically the same day that Bernard Broens passed away. I will always remember Matt as a dedicated man, who showed the most amazing spirit and optimism in the face of terribly difficult conditions.
I request that your thoughts and prayers go with the Stallebrass family.
