Yesterday night saw the last game of the Western Cape Closed prelim stage. In the final of the Losers’ bracket, Chris Welsh dominated most of the game, with Steve Kroon cheekily allowing a large group to become weak while trying to steal territory to catch up. Chris capitalised well, but under time-pressure allowed Steve to make a ko for the large group. In the ko-fight, Chris made a huge blunder thinking an eye was false, allowing Steve to live with his group for no compensation, forcing Chris to resign.
Steve and the other qualifier, Bernard Broens, join the top 4 players from last year’s league in this year’s Challenger’s League, to determine who will challenge Konrad Scheffler for the 2nd Western Cape Meijin title. The pre-qualified players are Andrew Davies, Lloyd Rubidge, Reinhardt Messerschmidt, and Shui-Tao Fan. The round robin league will be played on 14-15 October.
