Although Konrad had already claimed the title of Western Cape Meijin last week, the tournament as a whole did not finish until this Sunday, when the last match of the Challengers’ League was completed. In the final game of the league, Jaco Swanepoel, 4k, built up a lead of about 20 points against his opponent, Shui-Tao Fan, 3k. However, under severe byo-yomi pressure, Jaco failed to defend a group and was forced to resign.
This result means that Jaco will be demoted from the league this year after losing all his games. The other player demoted is David Richfield, who withdrew from the league. Jaco and David both qualify for the quarter-finals of next years’ qualification stage. Andrew Davies, the loser of the title match, along with Shui-Tao, Lloyd, and Reinhardt, maintain their positions in the league for next year.
The players’ who reached Preliminary Round 3 this year are automatically seeded into the last 16 of the qualification phase for next years’ tournament. The qualification phase will be a double-elimination tournament with the undefeated player and the player with just one loss proceeding to the league.
