Andrew Davies wins Challengers’ League

Andrew Davies (1k) emerged undefeated from the Western Cape Meijin Challengers’ League this weekend, to claim the right to be the first challenger for the title of Western Cape Meijin in the Western Cape Closed. Andrew won the 2 games expected to be his toughest on time: against Reinhardt Messerschmidt (2k) and Shui-Tao Fan (3k), his other games were won by resignation (vs Jaco Swanepoel 5k) and a comfortable 20.5 points (vs Lloyd Rubidge 4k).

One match of the League was not completed due to scheduling problems, and as a result, the rest of the positions in the league are not yet finalised. This means that it is still unclear which player will be relegated from the league and be expected to re-qualify, although it will be either Reinhardt or Jaco. Jaco, who must still play Shui-Tao, has lost all his other games, while Reinhardt’s only victory has been against Jaco, suffering upset defeats against Shui-Tao and Lloyd.

The other player to be relegated is David Richfield, who withdrew from the league last week. More details will follow once the other positions are finalised.

Finally, a word of thanks to Andrew Davies, who served as the tournament director and host for the tournament.
