Victor Chow, South Africa’s top ranked player, cruised to a straight-wins victory in the round-robin South African Contenders’ tournament this weekend, the final leg of the South African Closed Championship. Victor reclaimed the title from Ben Gale, who has held it the last two years. This year, 3-dan Ben came 4th, with 2 wins, suffering upset defeats at the hands of 1-dans Welile Gogotshe and Konrad Scheffler, who ended 2nd and 3rd respectively.
5th and 6th were taken by Paul Edwards and Julius Paulu. Usually, the contenders’ tournament has 8 players, but 2 of this years’ qualifiers, Cheng Lai and Bob Gale, did not participate in the tournament, and they were thus placed 7th and 8th in the championship.
These positions in the closed championship are used to allocate placing points, which play a major role in determining South Africa’s representative to the World Amateur Go Championships. For the placing points allocation, see the SA Closed page.
Full results of the tournament can be downloaded in this MS-Excel file, or the round-robin table can be viewed on the the SA Contenders’ 2005 page. Final placings in the SA Closed can be viewed here.
