South Africa, represented by SAGA, has been selected to host the African zone qualifier for the 3rd Toyota & Denso Cup World Go Oza, sponsored by the Toyota Motor Corporation and the Denso Corporation. Although only in its third term, this tournament is one of the major international titles contested by pro’s. Unlike most other pro tournaments, amateurs are permitted to participate in the tournament. Also, the tournament is only held every second year, rather than annually.
The main knockout phase of the World Go Oza, will take place in August 2006, and will consist of 32 players, with the final being played in January 2007. Just 1 of the 32 players in the knockout phase will be selected from Africa, Oceania (Australia, New Zealand etc), and the rest of Asia (i.e. Asia excluding Japan, China, Korea, and Taiwan) combined.
The African Zone qualifier, the 3rd Toyota & Denso Cup World Go Oza African Qualifying
Tournament, will select a representative from Africa to compete in a playoff against the Oceania and rest of Asia representatives – this playoff usually takes place in Japan. Historically, the winner of the qualifying tournament is declared African Oza – Victor Chow has held the title for its first two terms. Unfortunately, Victor has been eliminated by an Asian representative in the playoffs in the previous two tournaments.
In the past, the African Go Oza Championship has been held at the same time and venue as the South African Open tournament.
