A hearty congratulations to Hugo van der Merwe, 16 kyu, who has won the 5-player Stellenbosch second league for 2005. While other positions in the league are not yet finalised, Hugo won all 4 of his games in the round robin tournament to claim the league victory. His victory in the tournament was largely due to his upset win against Christina, who is 5 stones stronger according to the ranking system.
In other news, there have been two promotions at the Cape Town club: Chris Welsh (18k) after a good victory on scratch against Hugo, and Alex Siemers (21k).
We also welcome a new member to the Cape Town club, Henk Hoving (26k). Henk was introduced to the game about 10 years ago by a friend of his in the Netherlands, Martijn van Roermund, who in 1995 represented the Netherlands in the Senior Group of the 12th Youth World Go Championships (with 2 wins there, he outperformed Alexander Dinerstein, who is now leading the European Open). These days, Martijn is rated as a 2-dan. For those not aware of the Dutch Go-playing strength, this places Martijn 57th in the Netherlands (using EGF ratings), and he is currently placed 162nd in the European Open (after Round 7).
