After losing to the New Zealand representative in Round 7, Ben was drawn to play Mamy Rakotoarisoa of Madagascar in the final round. Ben posted a victory, and with a good sum of opponents scores ended in the top half of the field: 30th of 65 participating countries.
Ben wrote earlier today: “After some very erratic play I managed to finish up with four wins out of eight, not sure of final position but I am happy. I will try to send a more details with some game commentary etc after I return to SA in a few days time.”
We look forward to it, Ben, and congratulations on a good performance.
In other news from the tournament, Germany, U.S.A. and Canada were the only Western countries to make the top 10, with Germany’s Franz-Josef Dickhut taking 5th from Japan’s Yasuro Kikuchi. The top 3 positions were taken by China, North Korea and Chinese Taipei, respectively. A noteworthy achievement by the winner, Yu Qing Hu, is that his last 6 games of his 8 out of 8 streak were against the players finally occupying positions 2 through 7.
The other 2 countries from Africa, Morocco and Madagascar, finished 39th and 49th (4 and 3 victories).
Finally, for those interested in Cornel’s performance, he scored 5 out of 8 to finish 24th.
