Many players are repeatedly told that if they just count their games a little more often, their play will implrove substantially. However, I am often mystified when it comes to counting the game during the opening and the early middle game. Steve Fawthrop, an American 5-dan for the last 17 years, who hangs around in KGS’s Straw Hut as DrStraw and often gives lessons there, has given some lessons on counting in these phases and made them available on his website, http://stevefawthrop.goplayer.info. These lessons should be valuable for anyone from around 15 kyu to those just shy of achieving dan status. His website also features some handy tips on studying Go, and some Go book reviews.
